Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Usman Zuru.
Idris described the loss as “tragic and monumental” for the state and the nation.
Zuru, represented Zuru constituency and held the traditional title Lifiddan Zuru, died on Monday, April 6, at a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving treatment for a prolonged illness. His death was confirmed by the Clerk of the Assembly, Suleiman Shamaki.
In a condolence message issued on Tuesday, Idris said he was “devastated” by the passing of a trusted ally and key figure in Kebbi’s governance structure.“I have received with profound shock and a heavy heart the painful news of the passing of Rt. Hon. Muhammad Usman Zuru.
“He was a committed lawmaker, an outstanding leader, and a true patriot whose devotion, humility, and wisdom distinguished him in service to our state,” the governor said.
The governor described the late Speaker as a stabilising force in the legislature and a dependable partner in advancing the state’s development agenda.
“His death has created a painful vacuum in our leadership. His calm disposition, maturity in handling state affairs, and unwavering commitment to unity and progress will remain indelible in our hearts,” Idris added.
Zuru, as Speaker, played a central role in maintaining legislative-executive harmony, particularly under the current administration.
Observers say his tenure brought relative stability to the Assembly, with fewer internal crises compared to previous sessions, a factor widely credited to his consensus-building approach and deep understanding of the state’s political dynamics.
Idris noted that the timing of his death makes it even more painful.
“Kebbi has lost one of its finest sons at a time when his experience, counsel, and statesmanship were most needed,” he said.
Beyond government circles, tributes have continued to pour in from political associates, traditional leaders, and constituents across Zuru Emirate, many of whom described the late Speaker as accessible, principled, and deeply committed to grassroots development.
Born on April 5, 1970, Zuru is survived by his wife and five children.The governor prayed for the repose of his soul, asking Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, while urging the family, the Assembly and the people of Kebbi State to find strength in this difficult time.
