Awujale’s death, huge loss to Nigeria -AfDB president Adesina

The outgoing President of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina, has described the passing of the Awùjalẹ̀ of Ijẹbuland, Ọba Sikiru Kayọde Adetọna, as a monumental loss to Ogun State and Nigeria.

The monarch joined his ancestors on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.

His remains were laid to rest at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on Monday.

His death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, traditional institutions, and Nigerians across different walks of life.Adesina, in a tribute posted on his X handle on Monday night, extolled the virtues of the revered monarch, who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, and reigned for over six decades.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Kabiyesi Ọba Sikiru Kayọde Adetọna, the Awùjalẹ̀ of the Ijẹbu Kingdom.

“Enthroned on April 2, 1960, he was one of the longest serving and most respected traditional rulers in Nigeria,” Adesina wrote.According to him, the late Awujale ruled with “strong commitment, remarkable dedication and impressive service,” ensuring peace, unity, stability and progress across Ijebuland and Ogun State.

He added, “Kabiyesi’s passing is a huge loss to the people of Ijebu, Ogun State and Nigeria. May God comfort his family and the people of Ijebuland and the government of Ogun State. May Kabiyesi’s soul rest in peace.”
